Theatre remembered in the 50’s and 60’s

In the late 50’s and 60’s before the era of the Mega Cinema Complexes, The Norwood Theatre/Cinema was one of the few local Theatres. We also had the Guild Theatre ( now Conrad’s Restaurant ) and the South Norwood Theatre, which had a marquee that said “Opening Soon”… it never did. Dedham had the Community Theatre, East Walpole had the Park Theatre ( now Peggy Lawton’s ) and Foxboro The Orpheum ( I think anyway ). As a kid I remember Saturdays and paying a whole quarter to see cartoons and a movie. Grape soda from a machine was pretty special as well. My Mom had told me that she would pay a nickle to go to the Guild Theatre and if you gave the Policeman a kiss on the cheek… well you got in free! The Renaissance of the Norwood Theatre will be a true miracle. Submitted by Robert A. Dempsey
