A letter from Susan Lewis, owner of the Norwood Theatre about important box office changes in the fall of 2025
We have been dealing with inflated third party ticket sales for over a year and recently it has been getting worse. The third party market is growing and it is becoming harder for the ticket buyers to recognize where the primary tickets are sold. Consequently, our patrons are paying inflated ticket prices when tickets are still readily available on our site at the correct price. This is happening even after a law was included in the "Mass Leads Act" in Nov. 2024 in our state.
Our box office staff make every attempt to help patrons that realize their error after purchase. In almost all instances, these third party sellers provide us with inaccurate contact information at the time of their original purchase, and there is no way to contact them to question their intentions. Our hands are tied at that point. The only option for patrons who purchase these inflated tickets is to contact their bank or credit card company to stop the charge.
We have done much research and found solutions that will help us avoid this problem. I wanted to share our new box office policies that will hopefully stop the third party market from selling these overpriced tickets to our events. We are implementing most of the changes now. All of our policies will be in place when we begin to announce our 2026 Season.
One of the only legitimate reasons we can see that these reseller sites could be useful is if the ticket holder has a reason to not attend (illness, scheduling conflict, etc). For this reason we are cancelling our no refund or exchange policy, taking away the only legitimate reason to resell tickets.
At the time of purchase, our patrons will be informed of our new policies, and that we do not honor tickets purchased through third party resellers. They will be asked to acknowledge this policy when purchasing online, in person or on the phone.
We will also be eliminating all etickets and only using hard tickets available for pick up and will call. Starting September 2, 2025 patrons will no longer be able to purchase new etickets, and in 2026 none of our events will include the eticket option. (Etickets purchased before September 2 will still be valid.) This will help eliminate the ease with which the third party system operates.
We will periodically remind our audience (through newsletters and social media) to check tickets they have purchased, to confirm that they bought them directly from The Norwood Theatre. If they suspect they may have third party tickets, they will be asked to contact our box office to confirm their purchase, and advised on how to proceed if they did purchase from a third party.
We will be checking attendee IDs at the door as needed.
We sincerely hope that these measures will help eliminate the sale of tickets to The Norwood Theatre events through third party resellers. We want all of our patrons to be confident that they are purchasing real tickets, from us, at the correct price.
Thank you,
Susan Lewis
